I just discover google music timeline. That leads me to several publications from google about music.
I wonder why does google work on music. Google is a commercial company whose business model is based on ads and whose job is based on search engine. Of course, those research add to mankind knowledge and I have no doubt google's researchers want to improve science. Still, any CEO wants the job made in its company to serve the company, i.e. generate money. I can see the following reasons to integrate such research work into the google's business:
- search engine improvement: auto-tagging of music to ease indexing
- ads and sells improvement: promotion of artists (google play stuff)
- search engine adoption: test of user interface based on timeline
